ABOUT

1913

2025

Sumitomo Chemical was founded in 1913;

to produce superphosphate fertilisers from the sulphur dioxide emitted at Besshi Copper Mine in Niihama (Ehime, Japan) as a way of reducing environmental problems arising from gas given off during the copper smelting process. In the 1950’s, Sumitomo Chemical made the transition into the crop protection business.

INNOVATION FOR OVER
A CENTURY

Sumitomo Chemical is the 8th largest global crop protection company,

with a strong R&D focus on the innovation of both biorational and conventional chemical products. Sumitomo Chemical operates businesses in the Agro & Life Solutions sector, which includes crop protection, but also in following sectors: ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Solutions, Advanced Medical Solutions and Essential & Green Materials.

HYBRID APPROACH

SHAPING THE

FUTURE OF

AGRICULTURE

SC inset image.jpg

Based on its combined solutions, Sumitomo Chemical, as an R&D company, is taking a leading position in the development of the agriculture of tomorrow.

Sumitomo Chemical, whose main business was initially dedicated to conventional products, also strongly supports biorational product development in Europe.

In 2000, Sumitomo Chemical acquired the business from Abbott Laboratory, and it established Valent BioSciences. At that time, Sumitomo Chemical was the first to offer a range of conventional chemicals and biorational products.

GLOBAL R&D
TO BENEFIT
UK AGRICULTURE

Today, Sumitomo Chemical has two major product lines – Conventional Chemicals and "Biorationals" – for its AgroSolutions Business, coming from its two R&D Centres based respectively in:

TAKARAZUKA, JAPAN

Global hub for research and development of new agrochemicals (discovery and evaluation of new compounds), new manufacturing methods and formulation studies activities.

Libertyville, Illinois (USA):

The Melnik and Shafer Biorational Research Center (BRC) is home to laboratories, pilot plants, growth chambers, and greenhouses dedicated to researching and developing proven biorational innovations.

In Europe, Middle East and Africa, the Agro & Life Solutions Sector of Sumitomo Chemical is represented by Sumitomo Chemical Agro Europe S.A.S (Headquartered in Lyon - France).  Five affiliates are dedicated to local distribution (Sumitomo Chemical (UK) Ltd., Sumitomo Chemical Italia s.r.l, Kenogard S.A., Philagro France S.A.S and Philagro South Africa (PTY) Ltd).

Sumitomo Chemical (UK) Ltd is based in London, where the EHD (Environmental Health business) is also located.

Sumitomo Chemical is convinced that the successful combination of biorational solutions with conventional chemistry will contribute to sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

Sumitomo Chemical (UK) Ltd (SCUK) already supports UK farmers with a number of key products, including:

Soleil®

A combination of bromuconazole and tebuconazole for rust and fusarium control in wheat

Sven®

A leading pyrethroid based on esfenvalerate in a wide range of crops

Dipel®DF

The leading Bacillus thuringiensis - a biorational product with specific activity against lepidoptera in a wide range of crops

In the next few years SCUK is expecting the registration of a number of new active ingredients, for the control of key diseases in cereals.

Indiflin™

(ISO common name: inpyrfluxam) is a novel fungicide active ingredient discovered by Sumitomo Chemical.

  • Indiflin belongs to a class of compounds known as succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHI).

  • This product exhibits excellent efficacy against rust diseases in cereals and rhizoctonia in potatoes. This new fungicide is already registered in Japan, Argentina, the United States, Canada and Brazil.

Pavecto®

(ISO common name metyltetraprole) is a disruptive new fungicide discovered by Sumitomo Chemical.

  • The compound belongs to a group of fungicides known as Quinone outside Inhibitors (QoI), and with the chemical structure tetrazolinone, represents novel chemistry in this group.
  • Pavecto differs from existing QoI fungicides because it controls pathogens that have developed resistance towards strobilurin fungicides currently available on the market. This is why Pavecto has been placed in a QoI subgroup with the specific FRAC code “11-A”- chemical group of tetrazolinone.

Pavecto is a highly effective fungicide for the control of a broad range of diseases, including Septoria leaf blotch on wheat, net blotch and ramularia on barley. In addition, Pavecto will play an important role in resistance management, providing growers with an innovative tool to protect their cereals and secure yields.
